Travelling as a Vegetarian Around the World
Admittedly when I first started travelling I was by no means a vegetarian and I actually quite enjoyed trying all sorts of strange foods that the world had to offer. But by the second year, when I finally reached India, things started to change a little bit. Fellow travellers had told me that avoiding meat in India would greatly improve my chances of survival, and so from the very moment of touch down in the mighty subcontinent I instantly turned vegetarian…
While being a vegetarian seemed first at simple necessity, it slowly turned into a conviction after realizing how amazingly great vegetarian food could be. Also, after spending a few months in rural India and Nepal where one was simply living with all the animals day in and day out, it felt all of a sudden rather strange to even think of killing and eating them. This feeling was even strengthened after living in a Buddhist monastery for a while and learning that leading a life without harming any sentient being was actually the right thing to do…
From that point on finding vegetarian cuisine in different countries around the world became a new challenge for me, but it was one that I was certainly glad to meet. Eating food with a greater level of awareness and living with the knowledge that no-one had to die for my lunch made all the efforts worth while. So, what follows is a summary of my food experiences in various countries. Hopefully they will inspire you to enjoy some delicious vegetarian meals during your travels as well… : )
