Places I have been to while Travelling
The whole purpose of travelling seems to be visiting interesting places and every one of us, even if never travelled extensively, has been to a few such places already. But no matter how much we travelled, we all have a mental wish list of tempting places that we would like to visit in the future. While it is certainly good to know where we want to go, it is even better to keep track of where we have been already.
Before I left for my first world trip, I had only been to very few places in Europe and North America. So the fact that I had only seen such a small part of the world, paired with great curiosity was probably one of the main reasons why I felt the urge to get up and explore a little bit of what is out there. Obviously the purpose of travelling should never be to just put check marks behind as many countries as possible, but it is still more than interesting to see on a world map where you have been already.
It is especially interesting to see where you have been, because we all make different choices of where we go in the world and the map is a great tool to visualize our travel behaviour. While interpreting it a little bit, one isolated dot means only that you have in fact been to a certain place or country, but a whole cluster of dots in one area rather suggests that you have truly taken the time to dive-in and experience that particular region or culture.
Even after three years of travelling and seeing many countries, it is still amazing to look at a world map like this and realize how many more places there are to visit. Currently I have a list of about 650 places that I have been to in 69 unofficial or 61 official countries out of the 206 countries that exist in total (193 UN member states, 2 observer states and 11 other). Additionally, I have been to numerous territories in the world which, although culturally or geographically different, don’t count as separate country.
In general I have to say, the world is such an amazing place that you really need to get out there and visit some places for yourself… : )
