Travel Day 651 – Kathmandu to Bangkok, THAILAND
The day started pretty early with hailing a cab, waving a last good-bye to Thamel and Kathmandu, plus catching a flight to Bangkok…
While the flight was technically nice, it was unfortunately delayed and by the time we finally arrived and received the luggage, I realized that there was not much time left to see anything of Bangkok itself. So my first action on the ground was running over to the airline office and requesting a different departure day for Indonesia. But as it turned out, my flight could unfortunately only be changed until 48 hour before the scheduled departure and that time had already passed. So the only option left was to accept my very short time in Thailand and to simply make the best out of it…
After sharing a cab into town and settling in, making the best of the time in Bangkok meant to head straight up the street and find my favorite Pad Thai place. The Pad Thai served there was so good, especially after months of eating Daa Bhat, that I ended up inhaling two full portions with lots of extra peanuts and yellow chilies. But that still wasn’t quite enough and so for a desert I had to get not only one of the great fruit yoghurts that I loved so much, but also a portion of sticky rice with freshly sliced mango…
Adding to the mix my favorite drinks of Thai iced tea and fresh fruit juice, and I found myself in Thai food heaven. So it came to no real surprise that once I met my new friends from the hostel for a beer on Khao San Road, I was so full of delicious Thai food and drinks that it was almost impossible to fit in the scheduled beer. But of course, enjoying at least one Chang while watching the world go by on Khao San Road was not only imperative, but the perfect way to round off the first day back in Thailand…
The funny thing about being on Khao San Road again was that I remembered this street as the Thamel area of Bangkok. But now, in direct comparison, it was quite surprising how much more sophisticated and civilized everything was here than it had been in Nepal. Here the tourist madness seemed to be confined to Khao San Road only. The side streets were still more relaxed, playing chilled house music and hosting small places with cheap eats and beer…
And while I was still a bit upset about the little time I had in Bangkok, at least I had the chance to enjoy Pad Thai and the people on Khao San Road for a little while in this great city… : )
