Travel Day 653 – Bangkok to Kuta on Bali, INDONESIA
My time in Thailand with less than 48 hours had definitely been much too short, but in the meanwhile I was already off to Indonesia…
While the weather was getting worse in Southeast Asia, Indonesia made the perfect destination as it was situated just below the equator, providing the reverse weather pattern. So the weather was supposed to be either at its best or getting better by the day, at least that was my rational. But after a long night out in Bangkok and a really early flight this morning, there was not too much rational thinking today anyway as I didn’t really get much sleep at all…
Packing, taking a cab to the airport and having a snack breakfast before checking in, was all I could handle to do. Since my cheap flight had neither food or drinks nor entertainment, at least the flight time could be perfectly passed by while taking an extended nap. Once arrived on Bali, we needed to purchase an on-arrival visa, but we had to do so in US dollars if we didn’t want to be overcharged and so I had to do an ATM run outside the airport…
After that it was off to Kuta and luckily I managed to split costs with two other travellers while sharing a cap into town. Since the two guys were staying in an expensive resort type place, our ways split again as I had to shop around in Kuta to find cheap accommodation with the help of some copied pages from a guide-book. But as it turned out, the price of the first so-called cheap hotel had tripled and the following ones were all about double the suggested price. So in the end I just had to bite the bullet and settle for the best value of the expensive options…
The price of the hotel in Kuta was 15 USD per night, but it had good clean rooms, a nice green courtyard, palm trees and even a pool. The place was nice, but coming from Nepal where a room costs about 3$ US per night, I was a bit in shock about the amount of money one had to spend here on Bali. But once I had some nice local food and arrived at the beach, I was already over the whole money thing. Forgotten were the 15 dollars, the short time in Bangkok, the visa trouble at the airport and even the lack of sleep, once I saw the sand, the sea and the beautiful sunset over the ocean. It was simply the perfect ending of the first day in Indonesia…
