Travel Day 1056 – Kathmandu, NEPAL
While I was thinking to just spend one single night in Kathmandu, once the realization came how much I needed to get done, I simply had to change my plans…
Initially I wanted to leave this afternoon for the monastery, knowing that I had to arrive before 5pm because the reception was closing at that time. My scheduled class was starting tomorrow, but I had no idea at what time. So while I was sending an email to inquire the exact timing of my class, at the same time I reached the conclusion that under no circumstances was I able finish everything I wanted to get done and reach the monastery before 5pm in the afternoon…
Consequently I decided to give myself the complete day to finish all my undone business and then spend another night in Thamel, before reaching Kopan early the following morning. This seemed to be the only possible solution, when I was standing in my little hotel room, facing three backpacks that all wanted my undivided attention before I left the city. It was mad, but between my trekking backpack, the big backpack with the Tabla that I had stored in the Kathmandu and my daypack, I had a whole lot of organizing to do and turn this day into a Travel Sunday…
Well, even if this day didn’t really feel like Sunday, it definitely became a real organizational day after I opened all three backpacks and covered the entire floor of my room with their content. One thing was for sure, I had to lose as many things as possible and especially all my trekking gear, including the trekking backpack. So I packed up everything that I didn’t need any more and went to KEEP making a little donation of all my trekking related items, but I also used my time to write in their log-book…
These trekking log-books were a really useful tool as people wrote about their personal trekking experiences after their return and since these books had helped me a lot in preparation of my trekking, I saw it as my duty to give feedback as well for the next trekkers. After that, I urgently had to meet my travel agent to get a refund for the cancelled flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. Since it took me 22 hours on the road and two full days in buses and jeeps to get back without the plane, at least I wanted to make sure to got back that money that I had to work so hard for while being on the sketchy road…
Luckily everything worked out well and I was off to do some last errands before I would disappear behind the walls of the monastery for the next couple of weeks. Actually besides selling some books in the Thamel book shops, the most important errand became the hunt for a new rain jacket. My beloved really thin wind-breaker was ripped into pieces after almost three years of travelling and three hikes in the Himalayas. But luckily after lots of bargaining in some outdoor shops in Thamel, I ended up with something I never wanted to have: an original Kathmandu North FAKE jacket, great… : )
