Travel Day 1015 – Extended Langtang Trek, NEPAL
06/15 Khanjim via Sherpagaon and Lama Hotel to Riverside (2770)
It was our last morning on the Tamang Heritage Trek and it was our last stay in a traditional Tamang Village, because from now on we would be continuing our walk along the Langtang Valley Trek…
So I started the morning early with a stroll through the village while the sun was slowly rising behind the mountains. There was always a certain calm about these villages in the morning and I really enjoyed it. So far the Tamang Heritage Trek had been an amazing experience and every moment was worth the hiking efforts, especially seeing the nice stone villages and meeting the friendly Tamang people. Even when I was working around this morning, an old man came running after me with a key to open the Gompa for me…
After a nice breakfast on the porch of the rustic family guesthouse, we were then off to Serpagaon on a seemingly endless 3 hour-walk. My leg was giving me trouble today and I had to stretch every time we stopped. On top of that, the rocky path that was going up and down plus the lack of interesting scenery made this morning feel like a real drag. So far we were not very impressed by the Langtang Trek and we were really hoping that this would change soon…
Unfortunately it didn’t change much. Serpagaon was a small place and we ended up staying for a while, just resting, having a tea and a snack. From Serpagaon down to Rimche it was then a much quicker walk and we decided to stay in one of the two or three guesthouses for an afternoon tea. There was no actual village in Rimche, but a lot of tourists passing by on their way down towards Bamboo Lodge and probably eventually back to Syaphru Besi…
It really seemed that the nicest part of out walk lay behind as, especially because for the rest of the day the trail continued only down in the valley in dense forest. Instead of nice views and traditional villages we saw a lot of tourists on the trek and only touristic villages. Well, a place like Lama Hotel could not even be described as a village since it only consisted of tourist hotels, one next to the other, and local people trying to hustle us into staying overnight, having a meal, or at least a tea at their place and not at the place next door. It was quite painful…
Needless to say that we were not really impressed with our first day of the Langtang Trek and all we could think of was to get as far away as possible from this place called Lama Hotel. Ideally we wanted to make it to Ghodatabella, but it turned out to be too far away and when the rain started setting in, we decided to end our day in the valley at the small and simple Riverside Lodge instead…
It seemed that the Riverside Lodge was at least a nice enough place for the night, only the lack of views and the extreme cold due to its proximity to the freezing river were not quite to our liking…
