Travel Day 872 – Kolkata, INDIA
It was a new day of a new routine and we started it quite early while meeting our teacher, helping to pack up all his Tablas and bringing them via taxi down to the rehearsal location by Kalighat…
Once we arrived and unloaded all the Tablas, all the other players started to trickle in as well with their instruments. The big task of the morning then became making good use of the sticky labels and tags that we had fought so hard for yesterday. Everyone needed to label every single piece of their equipment and within minutes the rehearsal room turned into complete chaos for the next couple of hours to come…
It was almost amazing to see how unorganized a rehearsal set up could be but finally by noon time everyone had dome their labels and was sitting on their required position. What came then was continued chaos in form of trying to follow the script and play the compositions as they were laud out…
We actually got engaged as well and had to fill in positions temporarily for missing members. This gave us the great chance to participate in the chaos and hit a few bols here and there where it seemed fit. It probably wasn’t until well in the afternoon when we slowly started to realize what we were actually doing and how to follow the script. The fact that the entire rehearsal was held in Bengali obviously didn’t help our efforts very much and so we ended up with yet another quite challenging afternoon…
Even if this had been a rather chaotic day, getting a glimpse of what it could sound like when 22 excellent Tabla players play a composition in tune was simply amazing and we were really excited to hear more of it over the next couple of days…
