Travel Day 968-72 – Varkala, Kerala, INDIA
While the last couple of days had been great and filled with little activities, now I decided to rather focus on some work on my website…
Keeping up my diary during my travels had already become quite a challenge, because it gradually seemed to expand and take up more and more of my actual travel time, but now I felt it was a good time to stop all activities and upload some photos. So once I started actually looking through my photos it seemed plain crazy how many photos I had taken over the past three years while travelling. But on the other hand it was more than great to finally start looking through and organizing some of them…
One of the most interesting things for me personally was to actually reminisce and see which places I had been to at this time in March, over the last couple of years. Since my very first world trip had started in September in South America, by the time March 2010 came around, I was already in Southeast Asia and the country I spent the most time in was Thailand…
From Bangkok I had travelled north through Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and Chiang Mai into Laos, then through Vietnam into Cambodia and then back into Thailand to see the beautiful islands in the south. While had obviously been an amazing trip, it was also following the usual backpacker path through Southeast Asia. One year later, in March of 2011, I was already up to more interesting and more remote destinations…
First I had spent some time in India and then in March I had reached Nepal, where I ended up staying for a full three months, the longest time I had ever spent in one single country while travelling. Not only did the people in Nepal turn out to be extremely friendly, but the mountainous landscapes as well as the beautifully carved historic towns were absolutely stunning. By the time I left, on the very day that my visa expired, I knew that I would be back in Nepal rather sooner than later…
By the time that March 2012 came around, I was back in the corporate world of New York and it seemed that most of my time was simply spent in front of my two computer screens while working day and night. Even when not physically present in the office and even when not officially working, I found my mind still occupied with the work and with the tasks associated with it. A lot of anxiety, sleepless nights and stressful days for no valuable reason came along with this kind of life and I couldn’t wait for the day to come to have saved enough money for taking off and travelling again…
Overall it seemed that my life over the past three years had been quite eventful and in retrospect I wouldn’t want to miss any of the memories associated with it. While I couldn’t wait to go back to places like Thailand and Nepal, I was extremely happy to be away from my old stressful life in New York City. So I came to a very new appreciation of where I currently was in life, especially because I found myself in such a beautiful place as Varkala Beach in southern India… : )
