Travel Day 885 – Kolkata, INDIA
Tomorrow the final Tablaphilia concert is scheduled to be in Kokata, so today was the very last chance for the final rehearsal…
Unfortunately the only room available was the little classroom of my teacher and everybody had to fit in there to make the rehearsal work. For the final set there were actually 24 Tabla players since two had joined from overseas plus 6 singers and we were all cramped with my teacher in the little room. But it all worked out somehow and the sound was actually quite impressive between the closely spaced walls…
After enjoying the musical coziness for a while, I had to step out and do some errands. There were some things I personally had to get done, but I was also out for a last mission of my teacher. He ad given me a list of books he wanted to take with him when he would leave the country tomorrow and so I was once more running around and trying to find the things in need…
Unfortunately the big famous book store on Park Street didn’t have any of the books on the list and so I ended up digging though all the smaller stores in the little side streets. In the end I only managed to find one of the books, but I also saw a lot of little stores and other market places…
At some point I just walked into all the numerous market halls to see what they had on offer. They pretty much had everything somewhere; it just seemed to be the biggest challenge to know which stand had what kind of item. My personal favorite became the really old market halls with the nicely decorated stalls. As people seemed to spend most of their lives here, some stands looked almost like a little living room with blankets to sit on, little shrines and closets to store things…
For me it was my last mission, but it was nice to dive into the little market world and I was sure already that I would be back at some point to see more of it… : )
