Travel Day 928 – Fort Cochin, Kochi, Kerala, INDIA
After realizing how captivating Fort Cochin had become for me over the last two weeks, today it was finally time to say good-bye to this place with its nice colonial architecture…
It was funny, but I was almost feeling a bit sentimental about leaving Fort Cochin. During the last two weeks I had developed quite a routine in terms of local restaurants I used to go to, where I would go for a coffee and so forth. So today when I was doing my usual round, I couldn’t help but think that it would be for the last time in a while and I tried to say good-bye to everything and everyone…
While my routine had allowed me to meet some nice local people because after some time everyone simply recognized me, even on the streets, it also had brought me along some really nice architecture. I personally liked the white-washed colonial architecture by far the most and besides my usual routine, I tried to see something different every single day…
So this morning I left for a long exploration walk before the heat made such an excursion unenjoyable and I made an old cemetery my destination. I had seen the cemetery on one of the historic maps in the Dutch Palace and while it had been outside the city back then, today it was obviously interwoven in the fabric that made Fort Cochin part of Kochi city…
It turned out to be a good 30 minute walk along the shore to the place where I wanted to go, but at least I managed to find the old cemetery. Unfortunately it wasn’t really as spectacular as I had hoped it would be and so I rather enjoyed the scenery, the architecture and especially the nice colonial houses along the way…
I wished I would have been able to distinguish clearly between the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British houses, but it was simply impossible and in many cases I actually suspected the buildings had been altered so many times over the years that they could not be recognized anyway. So it was simply left to my own imagination to try and envision how the original Fort Cochin must have looked like before the Dutch or the British had arrived…
And while I was still envisioning Fort Cochin as this white-washed colonial town, I was slowly making my way down to the ferry and saying a final good-bye before boarding my overnight train to Bangalore. Yeah Fort Cochin really had been a nice place to stay for a while and I was sure that I would be back eventually… : )
