Travel Day 905 – Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, INDIA
Initially we wanted to carry on already today and see the next town, but instead we decided to have a nice Travel Daycation at the beach…
Since we had pretty much seen all the UNESCO Sites within the city of Mamallapuram, today we reckoned we could just have a relaxing day and enjoy for once having all the tourist facilities available. So we got up early and dragged ourselves to the beach with some to-go breakfast in hand. Since the immediate beach in town was not the finest and already occupied by cows, we just took a 10 minute walk up north along the ocean and finally set camp in front of a deserted looking resort…
The good thing was that our location had a few advantages. On the one hand the beach in front of the resort was actually nice and clean, but on the other hand we were still somewhat in the tourist area which allowed us to actually enjoy the sun in shorts and bikini. In other local areas in India this had been unthinkable, but here it seemed luckily ok for us to enjoy the sun, the beach and the rough ocean for as long as we liked it…
We actually liked it for a little bit too long and in the end I burned my back, not feeling the intensity of the sun with the nice breeze at the shore. But this minor detail couldn’t really lessen our excitement about this lazy day and so the Travel Daycation at the beach while doing as little as possible was obviously a huge success…
The beach laziness and relaxation could only be complimented by some extended late lunch in one of the many tourist restaurants with wifi. While just being able to hang out was great and usually not possible in local Indian places, the food was actually even better. Obviously by Indian standards the lunch here was kind of pricy, but the coconut prawn curry and fish curry were one of the best we had even eaten and well worth the extra rupee…
Some nice chai on our open terrace with sweet treats from the local German bakery later, and all we needed to round off this Travel Daycation was a good dinner. This was obviously not hard to come by and in celebration of this great day we even had a beer and a chat with other fellow travelers. Yes, it truly was a good day… : )

Hi Rob,
thanks for the idea. Unfortunately we had to move on rather quickly, but I am sure I will be back in Mamallapuram at some point… : )
