Travel Day 896 – Puri, Orissa, INDIA
After our Overnight Travel on the train from Kolkata, it was our Arrival Day at the coast of Orissa and at the beach of Puri…
Unfortunately it was quite an early arrival since our train finished its rattling journey as at 5am in the morning. There was barely sunlight outside when we left the train station on foot and it seemed way too early to look for any accommodation. So we decided to do the best out of the sleepy situation and we walked directly down to the beach with all our stuff to see the sun rise over the ocean…
It was really only a 10 minute walk down to the beach and it seemed the perfect start of the day to just sit in the sand and watch the waves come in while the sun was slowly making an appearance at the horizon. There were already a few local people around, taking an early morning bath, but for us the clear ocean air after all the dirt and dust of Kolkata, was everything we needed to be perfectly contempt on the early Arrival Day…
Finding a decent hotel proved then an easy task and while taking a stroll down the main road, we even found a nice place with a garden for a much better price than anything we had seen in Kolkata. Also the fact that the air was clean and the sun was out made us feel quite alive again, even after the lack of sleep on the train. An extended breakfast at the beach and a nap in the sand made this the most relaxing and enjoyable day in quite a long while… : )
In the afternoon we then figured out our onwards travels and walked all the way to the big Jagannath Temple complex which was unfortunately closed to foreigners. Only the adjacent library was open for some rooftop views into the temple complex. While the historic building of the library was almost better than the view of the temple, the scam to get money from tourists who visit the library was not quite as great…
But either way, the amazing local thali dinner and the final stroll at the beach definitely made this the most enjoyable Arrival Day in quite a while… : )
