Travel Day 007 – San Juan to Miami, USA
Due to Hurricane Erika I had extended my stay in Puerto Rico, but today I was finally leaving for Miami. The flight back to the US made this not only an Active Travel Day, but also the day where I finally reached the starting point of my Round the World Trip…
During my trip planning phase at home it had been quite a struggle to finalize all the details of my Round the World Ticket. In the end I had to change from a Continent Ticket to a Mileage Ticket, with the result that it was supposed to cost significantly more money. Since the price of a Mileage Ticket is established by travel distance, I was luckily able to save the additional expenses by subtracting some miles and relocating my starting point from Boston to Miami…
So Miami was actually never really meant to be a destination within my trip, but since I quite liked this city, it was a great chance to visit, even for a short time. Because of the Hurricane, my short time in Miami had been reduced to just one day, which in reality turned out to be just an evening. On the one hand the flight to Fort Lauderdale and the bus ride down to Miami took a lot longer than expected and on the other hand my hostel reservation fell through and I had to hunt for a new place to stay…
Technically it was not a big deal to find a new place, but by the time I was settled in and ready to leave the hostel for some food, the day was already over. While I learned that Active Travel Days could be a lot longer than expected, I also realized that you have to make the best out of every situation. In this case the best of all options seemed to be going out to a club since I was spending the night in Miami after all…
As it turned out, Roger Sanchez was playing in one of the mayor clubs and the hostel where I was supposed to stay had organized some discounted tickets for a group of people to go dancing until the early morning hours. And that was exactly we ended up doing. By the time we left the club, it was already daylight and I was left with nothing more but two hours of sleep before my Round the Word Trip was officially starting… : )
