Travel Day 840 – Toronto to Vancouver, CANADA
After spending three great weeks in Toronto, it was all of a sudden an Active Travel Day again and this time I was off to a new destination on the west coast of Canada, Vancouver…
Initially I had looked into the option of taking a train called “The Canadian” from Toronto to Vancouver in order to see a little bit more of this vast country. But considering the poor weather conditions at this time of the year and the price of the train, it didn’t quite seem worth it to me. Obviously I was only looking into the cheapest ticket option, which was a simple seat, but it still would have cost me over 500 dollars for the trip. As much as I love train rides, spending 4 nights and days in a seat and paying over 500 dollars was something I really couldn’t understand how it was justified, no matter how I looked at it…
Anyway, even if I liked the idea of riding though the Rocky Mountains, now I was flying over them and arriving in miserably grey and rainy Vancouver. It wasn’t quite as chilly as it had been in Toronto, but the downside was that the whole town was wet and covered in one big cloud of drizzling rain. As I found out later this was actually the normal weather for this time of year…
After settling in, I waited out the rain and then went for a little exploration walk around the area. By the time I made it out to one of the bridges, even the sun came out for about 10 minutes, allowing me to take some photos that were not entirely grey. But when I was standing at the bridge and looking at the city, I couldn’t help but think that something was odd about the look of Vancouver. The entire city seemed to be new and consisting of nothing else but glass and steel high-rise buildings…
Probably the only other country where a city looked like this would have been China, where the entirely new cities were just erected on a green field. Not knowing too much about the history of Vancouver, it seemed a bit strange to have an entire glass tower city with at least one Starbucks on every single corner of the street. Not really sure what to make out of this place I walked all the way down to the shore and the big park for some cloudy sunset views. Once the rain was setting in again I decided to rather retire early and leave it up to my full Arrival Day tomorrow to build an actual opinion about Vancouver…
