Travel Day 841 – Vancouver, CANADA
It was obviously a good decision to not judge this city on the very first day, but on the other hand, sometimes the first impressions turn out to be correct and the longest lasting ones…
Getting up early and seeing the rain outside did not really help me appreciate being in Vancouver. It seemed like a joke, but I asked around when the rainy weather would stop and people simply told me in March, meaning in four months from now. It seemed a bit strange, after all the good things that I had heard about Vancouver, this was how it really looked like. Maybe all my friends had visited here in the summertime and obviously had then a very different experience…
Anyway, I was up to a little mission today as I had to find a travel clinic to get my last immunization booster (this was obviously an emergency solution and I strongly recommend getting all immunizations as early as possible). Finally the rain stopped for a while and I used the time to walk across one of the bridges and off the peninsula towards the travel clinic. When I turned round and looked back towards Vancouver Island, I had the exact same impression as I had yesterday. The whole city looked like a jungle of high-rise condominium glass towers…
It was really strange and the lack of diversity seemed almost concerning, but after reading that Vancouver was supposed to be one of the most “livable cities” worldwide, it seemed that apparently many people liked to live in high-rise condominium buildings. While this condominium jungle town with the constant rainy weather wasn’t really my cup of tea, I rather made good use of one of the many coffee shops, once the rain was setting in again. Luckily by the end of the day the rain gave me at least a chance to walk back into town across a different bridge…
This time around it was actually possible to get a little glimpse of the snow mountains in the back, even if they were still mostly covered in the clouds. And while I got another look at this glass high-rise town from a different angle, I thought again what a strange place this was. It was almost hard to believe that this was my full Arrival Day in Vancouver and I still hadn’t seen anything that actually interested me. Maybe tomorrow would be a better day as I planned to visit Chinatown and Gastown, the original seaport settlement around a sawmill…
