Travel Day 846 – Waikiki, Honolulu, Oahu, HAWAII
After being so happy yesterday about the nice weather, today I woke up to rain, hazy grey sky and a chilly breeze…
Well, I guess it was still nice and warm compared to Canada where I just came from, but the prospect of having no sun, didn’t really make me want to run down to the beach again. So I spent all morning in the hostel with an extended breakfast while chatting with people and doing some internet work. It was actually great, because when you are sitting in an open air courtyard, nothing that you do actually feels like work… : )
By the afternoon things were then looking a little bit better and I could at least go for a walk. First I made it down to the beach, which was actually quite empty and then I decided to stroll along the water for as long as it was possible. As it turned out, it was actually possible for quite a while, passing by many fancy hotels and resorts, until I finally reached a little harbour with yachts…
While I could imagine that it would be nice to go sailing in the area and possibly reach the other islands and remote beaches by boat, I could not quite imagine spending my year-long vacation in one of the many faceless resort hotels. But this was apparently what most visitors here were doing. Our shuttle driver had told us that over 75% of all tourists to Hawaii stay on Oahu and most of them actually in Waikiki. So whatever kind of ugly hotels and shopping malls I was looking at, was exactly what most tourists would connect with their visit to Hawaii…
On the one hand I couldn’t really be bothered by everything, but on the other I still started thinking about options to leave the area for a couple of days. And while I was watching the sun set over the ocean, I was having a vision of a scooter that would become my best friend over the next couple of days. Yes, scooting around the island and seeing what else was there, that seemed like a great plan… : )
