Travel Day 814 – Detmold to Zurich, SWITZERLAND
As I had heard that Switzerland was supposed to be the best country in the world, I felt compelled to at least go on a little Side Trip and have a look while I was in the area, even if I only had time for a short visit…
Remembering back, I had been to Switzerland only once in my life before and it seemed like very long time ago. Back then it felt that Switzerland was really far away and I perceived it back then as not very interesting, which probably led me to not visiting again anytime soon thereafter. The only problem with my former visit had been that I just visited the country side and did not much than laze away the days in a hut in the mountains…
Even if getting to Switzerland included some Overnight Travel on a train, this time around it didn’t seem to be as far away any more. This might have partially been due to the very comfortable night train, but also because I was by now used to travelling much greater distances as I was when I came here the first time. Also I made sure to choose my target more wisely this time and I made the largest city in Switzerland, Zurich, the final destination. Additionally, in comparison to the rainy grey weather in Germany I thought it could only be better in Switzerland and I was even secretly hoping to see some snow there… : )
In order to get a first impression of Zurich, we went for an extended afternoon stroll after I was fully settled-in. We walked through the old part of the city, down to the lake and explored some of the little pedestrian streets along the way. Everything appeared to be extremely orderly, well maintained and in perfect condition, which was probably on the one hand due to the lack of damage during the war and on the other because of the extreme care of the people. As Swiss people seemed to be proud of their country, they also seemed to be quite proud of their heritage and made an effort to preserve it…
As far as I could judge at the end of my seemingly long Arrival Day, I wasn’t quite convinced that this was the best place in the world, but I still quite liked it and was happy that I could enjoy a close up view of the many historic buildings along the way… : )
