Travel Day 010 – Barranco, Lima, PERU
After spending most of the day in Miraflores yesterday, it was about time today to explore this lovely looking place called Barranco a little bit…
My first walk of the day took me along the main street that once seemed to have had a trolley running on it, until I reached the end of town and I could see the mountains. From here I found my way back to the city centre and enjoyed seeing all the official buildings around the town square. As it seemed all the government buildings were painted in yellow, I managed to visit the library building, the cathedral and a few other buildings around…
In general it seemed that all the buildings looked amazing and they displayed a wide range of architecture and conditions. There were on the one hand some really grand mansions in perfectly restored conditions, but there were also extremely desolate buildings that once must have been grand. On the other hand there were very simple looking colorful houses and at the end of the scale were patch work like and run down structures. While everything could be described as “well aged”, I was simply fascinated by all the colors, the textures, the materials, the sounds and the smells…
When I made my way back towards the cliffs, I stopped at a local restaurant that had been recommended to me and I had again one of the best foods I ever ate in my life. This time it was Ceviche, which was basically a huge pile of raw fish served with fresh lime juice, onions, corn and sweet potato. Even if eating raw or undercooked food while travelling went against all my resolutions, it was totally worth trying this food and it made me feel very excited about the prospect of having different kinds of food in all those countries around the world… : )
After lunch I went passed many restaurants with terraces catering to tourists, down the sloped walkway to the shore. Unfortunately there was nothing but a very stony beach right next to a main road, but it was still nice to see the ocean and listen to the waves break as they were coming in…
The rest of the day I just spend taking photographs in the area and having a nice coffee in one of the local places. The little bit of sun breaking through the layer of clouds had made this a perfect day to explore Barranco on foot and when I ended the day with a hostel mate in a local bar for some cold-cut dinner, I was already sad that I would have to move on by tomorrow morning…
