Travel Day 677 – Gili Air, INDONESIA
As this was not only my first full day on Gilli Air, but also the first day in a while without moving around, the plan for the day was to do as little as possible…
Obviously it was quite easy to be successful in doing as little as possible in a relaxed place like Gili Air, and so the day started with some nice breakfast, followed by some lazing at the nice natural beach. Relaxing in the warm sun and reading my book was simply the perfect thing to do, although it was getting increasingly hotter as the day progressed. Finally the excitement over the refreshing dips in the crystal clear sea wore off a little bit and it was about time to leave the sun and get some good lunch…
In this case lunch was with a fellow traveller and we made ourselves comfortable in one of the beach side restaurants with shaded bamboo seats and perfect beach view. Unfortunately the almost bed-like bamboo structures and the food were so good, that we simply ended up relaxing right there for the rest of the afternoon. Getting up again and walking to the other side of the island to enjoy another great sunset, almost ended up being a stressful thing…
And so, after such a pleasantly relaxed daycation on Gili Air, the even continued with the same theme while enjoying a nice fresh fish dinner right by the sea. The fact that the fresh fish could be chosen before it even went on the grill was great and the tranquil atmosphere in the beach side restaurant could not have been any better. But what also could not have been any better was the fact that we even managed to find a small beach party on the far end of the island. So we actually ended our relaxed daycation not only at the beach, but also with a Bintang in hand while listening to some nice music. What a perfect day on Gili Air…

Thanks for posting this, Dennis, it couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m heading to the Gili’s in a couple of days and wasn’t sure which one to go to. I stayed on Trawangan three years ago and it was built up but still quiet in other areas, and the locals we met were really nice, but after reading your post, I have crossed it off the list! I was worried it would be even more touristy and expensive, and now I know that it is!
Air sounds perfect though. Is Meno a lot more expensive?

Hi Christine, I am glad to hear that the post has helped you in your decision making about the Gilis. By all means, have a look at Gili Trawangan if you liked it there a few years ago, but definitely check out Gili Air as well. I actually skipped Meno because everyone told me that it was more expensive and mostly a place for couples. So for me personally Gili Air was the best place, but if you have enough time, check out all three and let me know what you think when you come back…
