Travel Day 674 – Kuta to Senggigi on Lombok, INDONESIA
Today was already our last day with the scooter and so our plan for the day was to drive back to Senggigi, catch a bus to Bangsal and a ferry to the Gilis…
The Gili Islands were quite a famous place to visit and we too wanted to see what the fuzz was all about. But since the scenery of southern Lombok was also supposed to be beautiful, we simple decided to take the scenic route back to Senggigi. Especially the beaches and the coastal views in this area were said to be some of the finest on Lombok, but everyone had also warned us about the road conditions in this area…
How scenic our trip ended up being and how bad the road conditions really were is probably best described with the fact that our 2 hour drive took us over 8 hours! Needless to say that our whole plan to reach the last ferry to the Gilis was down the drain, but that didn’t even matter because seeing this amazingly stunning area with its pristine, empty beaches was certainly the best way to spend the day…
Obviously we ended up stopping quite often to take photos and when the road got worse and worse we even had to get off the motorbike many times and slowly push it uphill. The road was definitely the worst I had even been on with a scooter and some of the potholes were real neck breakers, but on the plus side it was leading to places like Mawan and Selong Blanak. These beaches were some of the most beautiful I had ever seen and the only down side was that we didn’t have much time to linger…
Besides the amazing beaches, the little rural villages we were passing by were another real highlight. Seemingly untouched nature and unspoiled, friendly local people were the best reward for the painfully long hours on the bumpy road. Eventually we made it back to Senggigi and since it was already late, at least we drove up north along the coast to watch the sun set over the ocean. Seeing the Gili Islands on one side, the volcano Gunung Agung of Bali on the other and the sunset in-between certainly was the perfect ending of an amazing day on Lombok…
