Travel Day 654 – Kuta on Bali, INDONESIA
It was my first full day in Indonesia and on Bali, so the question that arose after the inclusive breakfast was how to make best use of the time here…
Since this seemed to be a little bit of a slow day and since I was paying to stay at a hotel with a pool, the logical decision seemed to be making good use of it. After changing rooms to one with pool view, the rest of the morning was then properly spent while relaxing and enjoying time on the bed like chairs at the edge of the water. Having a nice pool right in front of the room was really quite a change from Nepal and thus I used my first real chance to enjoy the sun in moths. Luckily the hotel seemed pretty empty, making it even more enjoyable to just hang out and simply alternate between the pool and the sun…
By the early afternoon things were getting a bit blend and my few printed pages of a guide-book proved completely inadequate to make a proper plan for the time in Indonesia. Something more substantial was needed, especially because I usually really enjoyed reading about the background of a country and in this case I had nothing in my hands. So after trying to avoid buying another thick guide-book that covered all the countless islands of Indonesia, I now felt the urgent need to have one, even if I really only wanted to visit Bali and Java…
But the thought of missing out on something happening around me and learning about interesting places like Lombok, Komodo and Flores from other travellers, I found myself all of a sudden hunting down the used book shops of the touristic area in Kuta. For the past three months I had still been carrying my bible thick India guide-book through Nepal, because I really wanted to go back to India. But now that it was quite hot and my backpack too heavy, I just had to bite the bullet and get rid of some attachment while trading my beloved India book for a used book of wisdom about Indonesia…
Quite happy about that decision, I spent the whole afternoon reading and planning my further trip around the islands, first in a café and later on the beach. All of a sudden there were so many things to be seen and discoveries to be made within Indonesia, that a decision seemed necessary about what could actually fit within the one month of visa duration. Of course expensive visa extensions seemed to be possible, as was a visa run to faraway Timor, but all of these options needed to be considered carefully…
At this very moment, it seemed best to figure out first what was there to do and see in the immediate surroundings of Kuta as well as on the entire island of Bali. So I finished my day on the beach again while enjoying the sand, the sea and the cloudy sky, reflecting beautifully on the water. Even if the touristic area of Kuta wasn’t quite my cup of chai, so far I really enjoyed the beach and the local food. And finally the first full day on Bali ended with a local beer while getting lost in thoughts about all the places that there were to be seen in Indonesia…
