Travel Day 1018 – Extended Langtang Trek, NEPAL
09/15 Kyanjin Gompa to KyanjinRi (4774) and Thyangsyap (3140)
It was finally our big day to walk up to the peak of Kyanjin Ri for some fine Himalayan mountain views, but unfortunately all the mountains were hidden behind dense fog when we woke up…
Actually we had already heard that many people spend several days in Kyanjin Gompa, just to wait for the perfect weather and probably to do some smaller day trips as well. We didn’t quite have that luxury since my friend had to be back in town in a few days to catch her flight and so today was our only real chance for the hike. But after having breakfast we decided to give it a little bit more time to see if the weather would clear up at all…
Actually about one hour later it seemed to clear up quite nicely and so I started the long and steep ascent right behind the village. It was pretty hard to judge how far up it would be to the peak and in fact as it turned out very soon, the actual peak was even higher and behind the mountains that we saw from Kyanjin Gompa. And as the trail was winding between the mountains, I had to sit down many times and rest over the course of the steep climb…
In the end it took me about 2 ½ hours to reach the peak and as I learned at the top, I had taken the longer and in fact not so steep trail. That was fine with me and I personally didn’t even want to see a steeper trail. I was also happy that I didn’t chose to climb up neighboring Tserko Ri since it was even higher, further away from the glaciers and it had its peak entirely covered in snow and misty clouds…
For me the views of the nearby Yubra Glacier were absolutely stunning, even if the clouds kept rolling in and obstructing the clear view to 7227m high Langtang Lirung behind. I actually sat down and waited quite a while, first to catch some breath and then to take in the views. After the final awareness that the views were getting more and more obstructed by the incoming clouds, I rather wrapped up my visit and started my descent down to the valley for some well deserved lunch at the guesthouse…
The afternoon was then pretty uneventful as we had to walk back the same way that we came. Only that today we had to do the walk in freezing cold rain, which wasn’t the most fun experience. The only other highlight of the day was a short visit of the old local Gompa which had apparently given Kyanjin Gompa its name in the first place. Since there was no actual stone village to be seen anywhere, all there must have been here, before the tourist town started spreading, was probably nothing but the old stone built Gompa…
Remembering our remote walk from yesterday, Kyanjin Gompa once must have been too such an amazing and tranquil place with picture perfect mountain views and nothing but nature around. It must have been nothing but stunning…

Good suggestion Rusudan! I will look into it and see what I can do to map the Langtang Trek…
