Travel Day 980 – Kanyakumari to Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, INDIA
Today was one of those days that felt like a complete waste because nothing really worked out and nothing really got accomplished…
At least after staying in the ashram for so long, I managed to wake up early enough to see the sunrise over the point where the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean were meeting. Luckily our hotel was close enough to the sea so that it was possible to simply walk out to the rooftop and watch the crowds fight their way through the street while the sun was slowly appearing behind a thick layer of clouds. But at least this time around the sun was more visible than it had been yesterday evening…
After some more rest, we then managed to join our new-found friends for breakfast and a nice walk down to the fishing village of Kanyakumari. While the main drag was rather touristy with lots of useless shops and people trying to make a quick sale, the fishing village part seemed much more authentic and local. But after seeing all the colorful houses and the big cathedral, we were left to wonder what else there was to do until we would catch our evening train up north again…
So we just went for a little wander and ended up all the way south at the famous beach with three different sands. Since three different seas were meeting in Kanyakumari, the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea,each of them was bringing its own kind of sand. There was of course yellow sand, but also black sand and even red sand. The funny thing about different sands was that the grain sizes must have been different enough so that the sands would not really mix with each other and so every single wave was creating a new pattern at the beach…
After the very curious three sands beach, the visit at the Gandhi Memorial afterwards was rather unsatisfying, mainly because most pats of the museum were actually closed. Also the local hair dresser was first closed and later when I came back two times, I also walked away two times due to constant power cuts and unbearable heat while sitting on the chair and wearing an apron. The same happened with the internet. I walked in three times and I walked away three times because the constant power cuts always decided to end my sessions prematurely…
So even if the saw a little bit of Kanyakumari, most of the day felt a bit like a waste and we couldn’t really do too much in the oppressing heat, besides taking constant showers and resting in our hotel room until it was finally time to catch the overnight train to Villupuram. Yeah, it was good to have seen Cape Comorin, Kayakumari and the very end of India. The heat was really crazy, but especially the beach of three sands had been worth the while today…
