Travel Day 965 – Varkala, Kerala, INDIA
Since I walked inland yesterday, I never actually got to explore the coastline south of Varkala Beach and so I decided to continue today where I left off yesterday…
The first part of my early morning walk brought me back down to the puja area between the cliffs, but then I continued the path up and onto the next cliff which I thought was winding its way down south along the coast. But unfortunately there appeared to be a lot of privately owned fenced off properties, occupying the waterfront of the cliffs. While in the northern area it had been possible to walk all the way along the cliff edge by the water, here one had to turn inland and didn’t actually get much of a view at all. So I rather turned back at some point…
There was however, between the spas and ayurvedic treatment places, one little house remaining that seemed to be the only indigenous structure in the entire area. And while it looked a little bit out-of-place in today’s context of the surrounding buildings, it was still a great reminder how the area once looked like. Actually only about 20 years ago the area was apparently still quite undeveloped and it could only be imagined how everything must have looked like with nothing but a few scattered local houses around…
Anyway, back down at the beach, I found a way to climb over some rocks and continue my walk south at the level of the water. The beach seemed to actually continuing south all the way along the cliffs and it was only interrupted here and there by rocks which could be climbed easily. The effect of these rocky areas was such that the southern beaches felt like little secluded beach areas and in fact I walked along the water for a really long time without ever seeing another person. This was especially the case because only the big properties on the cliff edge had direct access down to the beach by private stairs…
Eventually I reached a point where I decided to head back, but overall this seemed to be a really nice area if one wanted to enjoy a somewhat private beach. For me personally the walk would have been too long in the heat of the day, but during the morning it was more than perfect for a stroll… : )
