Travel Day 933 – Bangalore, Karnataka, INDIA
While I had initially gone to Bangalore to see my Tabla teacher and to listen to some classical Indian music, in the end I also got to enjoy something else: a lot of really good home-made food… : )
I actually had to say that I felt a bit embarrassed when I first arrived in Bangalore, because I felt that I was inviting myself to stay with a local family. My teacher had only given me the contact information of another student of his, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to get in touch and have a conversation until I actually arrived in Bangalore in the early morning…
So I felt a bit uncomfortable when I just called from the train station while sitting on my backpack and asking if I could come round and stay at their house, but luckily it seemed to be no problem at all. And as soon as I had found the way to the house and put my backpack down, I was treated as another member of the family and that really was a great experience to me…
Not only was I able to join the daily family business and go to concerts or other family visits, but I also got to enjoy the delicious home-cooked food. Every morning there were fresh Dosas, Idly or a wheat based Bangalore-cement, which was actually really delicious, waiting for me when I got up to the family room. Obviously all the goodies were accompanied by home-made vegetable curries and fresh chai…
For lunch I got to eat such amazing things as fresh Paneer curry with chapatti or other home-made vegetable dishes. One evening there was a little get-together and of course home-made Indian food was served again, but this time it was a whole buffet type arrangement where one dish seemed to taste better than the next and it seemed almost impossible to stop eating…
This seemed to have become the theme of my days with my family in Bangalore and all I used to hear was: we are not counting, we are just making sure you eat well… while I was served my third Dosa for breakfast. Obviously the food was nothing but amazing and so it was absolutely impossible to resist the temptation of eating more than I normally would have. So even if I ate too much food in Bangalore, it was at least really amazing home-cooked food…
Yes, overall I had to agree, Bangalore didn’t have the most or the best tourist attractions, but after the few days here, I would remember Bangalore as a place of friendly people, a place where I felt at home in a family, a place of great music and definitely a place of great home-cooked food. And that I will always remember and always be thankful for… : )
