Travel Day 883 – Kolkata, INDIA
It was once more back to the old schedule again, even if only for a couple of days, but I had Tabla classes in the morning again…
After many days of rehearsals and trips to the countryside for Indian classical music concerts, now I was sitting back in the classroom and I had to show my progress to my teacher. Unfortunately since I had been doing everything but practicing Tabla over the last couple of days due to lack of time, my progress was obviously not as great as it should have been and my teacher wasn’t too happy with me…
So not only did I get the task to practice certain things intensely as homework, but I also got another challenge for the next day: I had to find hundreds of white envelopes in different sizes and find an internet café that could print letters for my teacher. While finding sticky labels last time had felt a bit like the Amazing Race, today it was the same all over again while trying to find the correctly sized envelopes…
Once more, navigating through the crowded Esplanade area became a bit of a challenge, but I finally made it back to the New Market. Last time this had been the only place where I could find what I needed and today the same proved to be true. so on my little city mission I just kept telling people what I was looking for and eventually I came across the right shop and it had exactly what I needed…
Printing and internet were no real problem in the city center, but by the time I got back to the hostel it was late again and I didn’t have as much time to practice Tabla as I was hoping to have. But this seemed to become the theme of my travels anyway: There was just never enough time to do everything…

hey Dennis, do you have any advice on nice, economical places in the city to stay for a couple of months?
have a great time.

Hey Abhi,
I stayed at the Youth Hostel Kolkata which is up north in the city and a really good value for the spotless rooms. Their home cooked food is really great as well, but making it back up there by 10pm in the evening can be challenge. I guess it depends on where in the city you will spent most your time, but definitely check out their website and make a reservation if interested because they are always booked out in advance…
Enjoy Kolkata… : )
