Travel Day 865 – Kolkata, INDIA
When I woke up in the morning, I still felt a bit dizzy, but after sleeping all afternoon and evening, I felt about 80% recovered…
It was strange because I had been quite careful over the first days and I couldn’t believe that I got sick so quickly, but on the other hand, after getting sick and recovering, I felt I now had fully arrived in India. This came just in time for our fist actual Tabla class with our teacher. We finally played something together and received critique as well as new directions…
After the class we were then invited to join our teacher for a little afternoon excursion outside of Kolkata. Even if we had no idea where we were going or why, we willingly accepted the invitation and we were actually quite excited to get out of town and see something of the surrounding area…
Well of the surrounding area we saw mostly dust and heavy traffic as we drove north for about two hours to a place called Hooghly and later to Chandarnagar. The area was famous for its Mughal relics, its colonial history, as the Portuguese, the Danish, the French, the Dutch and obviously the British all had settlements here. Eventually the British assumed control over everything, but none of the historic events or places seemed to really concern us today…
What did concern us was a visit of the family our teacher’s teacher and a local concert. While the family visit was quite a touching and personal experience, the concert was then quite relaxing and a great conclusion of the day. It was actually quite an interesting concert as different artists took turns in performing short pieces of classical Indian songs. Luckily Tabla was one of the main instruments of the concert and so we could learn, appreciate and enjoy the music at the same time…
This was definitely the best day in Kolkata so far, especially because I was feeling recovered after my Miserable Sick Day yesterday…
