Travel Day 851 – Waikiki, Oahu, HAWAII
Unfortunately today I had to return my scooter after three exciting days of cruising around, but at least I had it still for the entire morning…
After the Pearl Harbor visit yesterday, I initially wanted to drive up the west coast and all the way up to Makaha Valley, but then two things had happened. On the one hand I spent a lot more time in Pearl Harbor than anticipated and on the other, by the time I was back on the road, it was in the middle of the rush hour. So after 30 minutes of stop and go, I gave up and rather cruised around in downtown Honolulu…
In general Honolulu was not a very nice place and driving on the many intersecting highways on the little scooter was actually rather dangerous and not enjoyable at all. But once I left and cruised around a bit, I even found some nice historic buildings. Unfortunately there were not really many of them and so after a little exploration drive, I went rather back to Waikiki. So today I was really only left with one thing to do on the scooter, visiting Shangri La…
After some cruising around and watching some surfers behind Diamond Head, I actually managed to find it. But as it turned out, Shangri La was just an unmarked and locked up property that could only be accessed with a tour from the local museum. It seemed a bit strange to me that I would have to find this museum, buy a 20 dollar tour and then come back here by tour bus to see this waterfront mansion. So since I wasn’t able to visit Shangri La after all, I rather went for a stroll along the shore and had a look at the other waterfront properties. It really seemed like a nice place to live and I already decided that I would be back at some point to visit again…
But for now, I thought the best use of my afternoon would be a visit at the local beach. After three days of scooting around and visiting many places, it was about time for a little Travel Daycation. Even if the local beach was awfully crowded and even if I only had the afternoon to spare, at least the weather was absolutely great, the water was still clear and refreshing and the warming sun made this the perfect afternoon beach rest…
