Panorama of Meteora Rocks in Greece
– click photo for enlargements –
Meteora is not only a place of great natural beauty with its tall rising cliffs coming out of nowhere, but also one with interesting historical architecture in the form of medieval monasteries. While this panorama is looking down into the valley with Kastraki Village and Doupiani Rock in the back, four of the six active monasteries can be seen as well.
From left to right, there are Roussanou Monastery, which actually functions as a nunnery nowadays, St. Nikolaos Anapafsas Monastery further in the back and Varlaam Monastery with the Great Meteoro Monastery right behind it on higher elevation. It comes to no surprise that the landscape and the monasteries are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Have you ever seen a dramatic landscape with monasteries that compares to Meteora?

Thank you very much Ryan! It’s great to hear that you enjoy seeing the panorama of Meteora. The entire landscape combined with the historic monasteries really is nothing but breathtaking and I definitely recommend a visit if you get the chance. By the way, I took the photo at the beginning of November when visiting Meteora and other parts of Greece…

People always look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them this is the #1 place I want to see in Greece. I mean, I’d love to see the islands too, but Meteora just seems so otherworldly and unique! Beautiful panorama picture, by the way.

Thanks a lot Erika! Meteora definitely is one of the best places to visit in Greece and the fact that barely anyone knows about its beauty makes it even more appealing. Definitely make sure to visit those dramatic landscapes and monasteries when you make it to Greece, they are a perfect contrast to the islands…
